This notebook should be designated ONLY FOR LATIN CLASS. This notebook will be used almost every day. Salvete Discipuli et Familiares/ Parentes (Hello, Students and Families/ Parents), Welcome to Latin class at Latin College Preparatory Charter School with Magistra Rascoe, your teacher. Latin is the ancient language spoken by the Romans over much of Europe and parts of the Middle East and Africa. Over sixty percent of our modern English language is derived, or taken from the Latin language; many foundational attributes embedded in American culture and society are passed down from the ancient Romans (government, law, medicine, architecture, education and many more), therefore its potential role in academic enrichment cannot be overstated. |
Roman History and CultureAn important and fascinating aspect in studying the Latin language is understanding the people who spoke and wrote it. The Roman society was one of ancient innovation - civil, technological and cultural.
|
Latin language skillsIn Ms. Rascoe's Latin class students will utilize various Latin phrases and words in
classroom interaction (greetings, procedures), learn to closely read Latin texts and translate into English. An essential component to learning to read and comprehend Latin is understanding grammar, thus supporting the development of the scholars' sensitivity to detail in reading both English and Latin. |
English Derivatives and Latin RootsOne of the most directly beneficial aspects in studying the Latin language is the connection made between Latin and English words. Sixty percent of our modern English language is related directly to Latin root words.
Real data from specialists in public education have shown that students who are exposed to Latin language studies perform significantly higher on SAT/ ACT verbal and writing portions, as well are more likely to adapt to more rigorous critical thinking skills and perspectives at the college level. |
