Professional BackgroundLike the vast majority of Latin students, Carla Rascoe began her Latin journey in high school, as a sophomore. Carla began her introductory studies in Classics Western Guilford High School in Greensboro, North Carolina with the wise, dynamic Lynn Simek (Greer), as her guide. Carla gravitated towards the precision and detail required for Latin, as well as it’s challenges in application of its complex content; as a result, she joined the Junior Classical League, participating in many school events and enrichment activities related to Latin and Classical Studies. Carla earned Silver medals on the First and Third Year National Latin Exams, and a Gold medal on the Second Year National Latin Exam. Carla completed several Latin language courses at UNC Chapel Hill, as a Music major from 1999-2003. After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill Department of Music, Carla decided to pursue a second career as a Latin teacher by enrolling at UNC Greensboro’s Department of Classical Studies in Spring 2009. Carla took various courses related to enhancing her Latin language skills and expanding her knowledge of Classical history and culture, including traveling to Rome, Italy and studying with the UNC Greensboro Classics Department in Summer of 2010. Upon graduation from UNC Greensboro with a post baccalaureate degree in Classical Studies, Classical Civilizations, Latin in May 2012, Carla moved to Atlanta, Georgia and began teaching high school Latin I and II at Coretta Scott King Young Womens’ Leadership Academy, a part of Atlanta Public Schools. Carla continued teaching here for the next three years, gaining significant, ‘on the job experience’ in the benefits and challenges in delivering the Classical perspective and content to populations of students not traditionally exposed to the subject. Carla became inspired by her accidental discovery of a type of niche and pioneering role available in growing and teaching in a previously unconventional setting for Latin and Classics. Ms. Rascoe was the Latin teacher at The Latin Academy Charter school during its last year, 2015-2016, teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Ms. Rascoe is currently the new Latin teacher at the Latin College Preparatory Charter School in East Point, Georgia. ____________________________ Developer/ Writer, Latin II Student Learning Objective (SLO) Test (Fall 2013) Atlanta Public Schools Georgia Department of Education Developer/ Writer, Middle School Latin Connections Student Learning Objective (SLO) Test (Fall 2015) Atlanta Public Schools Georgia Department of Education High School Latin Teacher 2012-2015 CSK High School, APS 1190 Northwest Drive NW Atlanta, Georgia 30318 |
